D&D Miniatures: Dungeons of Dread and New Rules Review

Courtesy of Wizards
The D&D Miniatures game just rebooted! It has new 4e rules designed to make it faster and easier to play. There's a new Starter Set and the new Dungeons of Dread set with 60 new monsters to command. So, how does it add up? Here's our review.
Rules Reboot
The basic game still lets you and your
friends battle with teams of
fantasy warriors and monsters. But the new rules mean there's
less math, moving is easier, magic attacks are more fun and recharging special powers feels like
mini-games. Small monsters aren't useless any more, which is awesome! But
strong monsters are tricky to use. It's a great new start for the game and lots of the older figs will work in the new rules once you
download the new cards, so old players don't lose out. Here they are, right-click and save them to your computer!

Getting Started
The
Starter Set gets you rolling with the new rules, five warriors (including a
dragon!) and four really nice battlefield maps to play on. Unfortunately, you can't store your miniatures in the starter! And the new
villain is a snake. A snake? What happened to orcs? Did
Saruman eat them all?!? The new starter is great for new players, but if you don't need the maps you can just
download the rules and you're fine. Here they are, right-click this link and save them to your computer.
D&D Minis 4e Rules
Thumbs Up:
Four really nice battlefields.

Handy to have the new rules book.
Thumbs Down:
Nothing to store your miniatures in.
No orcs or goblins? What's the snake thing?!?

Dungeons of Dread
This new
60-fig set comes in
eight-figure booster packs and is full of warriors,
elves, wizards and monsters. There are almost
no useless warriors and lots of cool ones, including monsters that battle like
video game bosses! It's a
fantastic first set for the game - a bit heavy on evil figs, but with a great selection of warriors and monsters.
Thumbs Up:
Almost no useless warriors!
Some awesome monsters - like the red dragon!
The new boxes are good for storing minis.
Big monsters that battle like video game bosses!
Thumbs Down:
The really big monsters aren't that strong.
