Like something pulled straight from a wizard's library, A Practical Guide to Monsters is a handy-dandy reference book on how not to get eaten by dozens of icky monsters. It's full of terrific artwork and fun facts on different creatures, from goblins to the undead and more. Here's our review of this colorful and helpful book by Nina Hess.
A Practical Guide to Monsters - Book Basics
Want to know how to confuse a
troll? How about escape a
goblin ambush or survive an attacking
Griffon? And who knew that
fake pointy ears would keep a
land shark from gnawing your legs off? Breaking it down by monster, this guide gives you
pictures and info on dozens of
creepy critters as well as scribbled notes with random "These also taste good in a stew!" type facts.
A Practical Guide to Monsters - Fun Facts
There are lots of
fun facts in this book as well as tons of
incredible artwork - most of it is way better than the cover art! It's an
easy read for fantasy fans of any age. And if you've read the
Knights of the Silver Dragon books you'll recognize the intro and some of the quotes coming from
Zendric the wizard as well as
Driskoll and
Kellach.
A Practical Guide to Monsters - Run Screaming!
Lots of the monsters in this book are classics -
ogres,
trolls,
ghosts,
vampires and
werewolves. But a few are totally bizarre creatures you'll only find in Dungeons & Dragons games and books. And they're weird even for D&D monsters.
Yrthaks?!? What about Umber Hulks?
A Practical Guide to Monsters - Bottom Line
A Practical Guide to Monsters is a
great casual read with some fun facts and lots of cool
fantasy artwork. Even with the slightly bizarre collection of monsters it's great for fantasy fans, especially if they've read the
Knights of the Silver Dragon books or play
Dungeons & Dragons.
