The Maze of Bones Book Review

Author: Rick Riordan

From the best-selling author of The Lightning Thief comes The Maze of Bones—the first of ten books in Rick Riordan’s gripping new series, The 39 Clues.

Orphan Life

Seven years ago, Dan and Amy Cahill’s parents passed away. They were taken in by their great-aunt Beatrice, a miserable old woman who wears so many rings that she could open her own tacky jewelry shop. And with her blue hair and bright make-up, Dan thinks she looks like a clown. Thankfully Dan and Amy don’t actually live with Beatrice since her building doesn’t allow kids. Instead, they live across town in a tiny apartment with their au pair—or nanny.

Goodbye to Grandma Grace

When Dan and Amy’s grandmother passes away, they lose the only relative they actually love. In her will, she reveals a life-changing family secret: the Cahill’s are the most important family in the world. Nearly every influential person in history—such as Abraham Lincoln, William Shakespeare and Harry Houdini to name a few—descended from the Cahill family. But there’s more to her will than just the secret.

The Inheritance

Each family member is given the ultimate choice: they can take a check for one million dollars or receive the first of 39 clues that will lead them on a dangerous quest to discover a priceless treasure—a quest that will affect the entire world. Much to Aunt Beatrice’s disapproval, Dan and Amy take the clue. But they’re not the only ones. Five other families accept the challenge.

The Quest

The teams travel to Paris, following the clues left by Benjamin Franklin, another descendent of the Cahill family. As Dan and Amy unravel each clue, their cruel, selfish relatives follow in their shadows. They’ll stop at nothing to destroy Dan and Amy’s chances of solving the 39 clues, even if it means eliminating them from the competition…permanently.

The Bottom Line

The Maze of Bones is the ultimate mystery. It’s filled with heart-pumping action and death-defying adventure. If you liked the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, then you’ll love The 39 Clues.
